CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia women’s tennis team won its first-ever ACC regular season title with two victories against Wake Forest and NC State over the weekend.
On Friday, following a Senior Day ceremony that honored Melodie Collard, Annabelle Xu, and Meggie Navarro, the Hoos blanked the Demon Deacons 4-0 at home. Navarro and her doubles partner Kaitlyn Rolls earned a 6-2 victory, and Xu took home a win over Krystal Blanch in two sets. Collard earned a singles victory against NC State Sunday in two sets on Sunday. Despite the Wolfpack taking two points, the Hoos finished the season in style with a 4-2 victory to win the title. ACC championships will begin in Cary, North Carolina, on Friday, with the No. 1-seeded Hoos playing at 3:30 p.m.
Menawhile, men’s tennis finished up its regular season Thursday at Virginia Tech. From the beginning, it was clear that the Cavaliers were in control, as UVA kept Virginia Tech off the scoreboard completely, 4-0. The top men’s tennis player in the nation, Dylan Dietrich, ended his conference slate undefeated in the ACC, and the Cavaliers took home a joint ACC regular season title alongside Wake Forest. They will also start ACC championship play this week as the No. 2 seed on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse’s home finale ended in a victory over No. 10 Boston College on Senior Day. After a pregame ceremony which honored ten Cavaliers, second-year attacker Fiona Allen netted six goals and third-year engine midfielder Kate Galica added two goals, five assists, and ten draw controls to boot. Galica’s first goal stopped a run of four unanswered from the Eagles, allowing the Wahoos to hold the lead. Her second added insurance to the 17-14 victory. Tied for fifth with three other teams, the Cavaliers will look to clinch an ACC tournament berth in its regular season finale at Virginia Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Men’s lacrosse looked to keep its four-game win streak alive against No. 5 Syracuse on Saturday but fell 14-9. The Orange rode an excellent performance from keeper Jimmy McCool to neutralize Virginia’s attack and secure the win. Despite the defeat, Virginia still has a chance to clinch a share of the ACC regular season title next weekend. It will host No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday at noon.
Softball
A fourth-inning home run from second-baseman Alex Call propelled the Wahoos to a 4-3 win in game one of three against Virginia Tech this past Friday. Call’s round-tripper supported strong pitching from Eden Bigham and Julia Cuozzo who picked up the win and save respectively.
Virginia Tech took a 5-2 victory in game two making use of some early small ball. That set up a Sunday rubber match, in which the Hokies put up four runs in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a throwing error that scored two and more excellent small ball that gave them a commanding four run lead the Hoos had no answer for. One more RBI from a bases loaded fielders’ choice brought the score to 5-0 Virginia Tech, which stood as the final. Next, the Hoos will head to Clemson this weekend for a road series.
Baseball
The week did not start out on a high note for the Wahoos, as James Madison cut into a big Virginia lead on Tuesday evening, before squeaking out an 8-7 win in 10 innings. That set up a crucial road series against Notre Dame last weekend. A back-and-forth game one broke the Hoos’ way after a late surge powered them to an 8-4-win courtesy of two Harrison Didawick home runs. The Irish then evened the series with a 5-3 win off the back of a seven-inning gem from ace Jack Radel. In game three on Sunday, the Hoos’ offense put up a powerful performance, run-ruling the Irish 20-5. Virginia will stay on the road to face VCU on Tuesday at 3 p.m., before Clemson comes to Charlottesville for a three-game series this weekend.
Golf
Three members of the men’s golf team finished in the top ten in the Calusa Cup over the weekend, while the Hoos as a team finished second by four strokes behind Florida. Paul Chang took the victory, finishing 12-under-par, while Michael Lee a joint-seventh and Bryan Lee finished ninth. This week, Virginia is in action at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Tournament.
