CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – No. 9 Virginia field hockey took down No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday 2-1, beating the Tar Heels on the road in Chapel Hill, N.C., for the first time since 2006.
Lauren Sloan put UVA on top just 38 seconds into the game, and Amelie Rees broke the tie for the Cavaliers right at the end of the first half. All-in-all, UVA outshot the Tar Heels 16-14. On the other end, keeper Nilou Lempers made five saves for the Cavaliers.
The win was a bounce-back for the Cavaliers following their 1-0 loss to No. 8 Duke on Friday. Julia Boehringer scored the only goal of the game for Duke as the Blue Devils outshot Virginia 7-3. Lempers made three saves in the contest.
This week, UVA will return to Charlottesville for a battle with Syracuse on Friday at 4 p.m.
Soccer
Following a defeat in its ACC opener to No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 13 Virginia women’s soccer came home on Thursday to play Miami. After 41 minutes of stalemate, Aniyah Collier broke the deadlock for Virginia with a strike inside the box. With the Cavaliers now leading 1-0, Addison Halper added two more after halftime. Her brace, combined with a stellar defensive effort by the Hoos, gave a 3-0 win.
Next, the Cavaliers will face No. 7 North Carolina at home Friday at 7 p.m.
Men’s soccer travelled to Wake Forest on Saturday, looking to grab its second ACC victory. The Demon Deacons took a quick two-goal lead inside of 25 minutes played. But Marco Dos Santos cut the lead in half with a pinpoint run in the 53rd minute, and AJ Smith capitalized on a Demon Deacons defensive error to knot the game up 2-2 in the 54th.
But in the final seconds of the game, a costly handball by the Cavaliers awarded Tate Lorentz a chance to bury the Hoos with the game-winning penalty, and Wake Forest walked away with a 3-2 win.
The Cavaliers will face Stanford on the road next Friday at 10 p.m.
Volleyball
The Cavaliers welcomed Ohio State to Charlottesville for a pair of matches. After dropping the first two sets in the Friday contest, the Cavaliers battled back thanks to strong efforts from Reagan Ennist and Reese Wuebker to knot the match at two sets a piece. The final set was tied 10-10 as the two teams went back and forth, but it would be the Buckeyes who won a 15-13 squeaker, taking the match 3-2.
The following day, the Buckeyes swept the Cavaliers 3-0 in the Saturday contest.
This week, Virginia hits the road to face Clemson on Friday and Georgia Tech on Sunday.
Golf
Men’s golf concluded play the Inverness Invitational last week in 16th position as a team, shooting 302 as a team, 48 over par. Josh Duangmanee shot the best on the squad, finishing seven-over-par, good for 26th in the individual standings.
