Wahoo Rundown: Hoos grapplers show strong at Southern Scuffle

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)-  Three Virginia wrestlers placed in the Top 10 finishes at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. over the weekend, led by Gable Porter taking fifth at 141 pounds and Colton Washleski ending up fifth at 157.

Kyren Butler finished seventh at 141, with his lone loss coming against Porter.

Eight Cavaliers managed to reach day two of the Scuffle.

Butler took out Nick Vafiadis of Navy to take home seventh place. Washleski defeated Kyrel Leavell of the Citadel and Porter won by medical forfeit over Haiden Drury of Utah Valley University.  

The Hoos begin dual competition in the ACC this week, with their first stop in Raleigh against No.9 NC State Friday at 7 p.m. 

Women’s basketball

The Virginia women swept three ACC contests to run their conference record to 4-0. The Cavaliers posted victories against SMU and Clemson at John Paul Jones Arena.  The week culminated with a double-overtime victory in Tallahassee over the Florida State Seminoles.  Star guard Kymora Johnson put up a double-double against the Seminoles, with 31 points and 11 assists.  

The Hoos take on Georgia Tech this Thursday in Atlanta beginning at 7 p.m, before returning home Sunday to take on Syracuse at 2 p.m. 

Men’s basketball

Men’s basketball split its first two ACC contests, dropping a triple-overtime New Years Eve tilt with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, but righting the ship with a 15-point triumph in Raleigh over NC State, 76-61.  As a result of the split, the Hoos dropped two places in Monday’s latest AP poll, moving from No. 21 to No. 23.  

Ryan Odom’s squad is back in action beginning Wednesday at 9 p.m. against California at John Paul Jones Arena.  They will battle Stanford this Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
