CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia linebacker Kam Robinson underwent surgery to repair a broken collarbone and will miss games early in the season, coach Tony Elliott announced Monday.

Robinson, who racked up 135 tackles over the past two seasons, suffered the injury during the team’s first full-pads practice. He had his surgery last week.

“We anticipate he’ll be down for a couple of weeks,” Elliott said after practice Monday.

Virginia opens with Coastal Carolina on Aug. 30 at Scott Stadium. Veterans James Jackson and Trey McDonald both have starting experience at the linebacker position.

Women’s soccer opens with win over WVU

Virginia women’s soccer opened the fall season with a 1-0 win over West Virginia at Klockner Stadium on Thursday.

Coach Steve Swanson’s squad, coming off a disappointing exit in the NCAA tournament this past fall, got the lone goal from midfielder Ella Carter. Carter cashed in off an assist from Lia Godfrey in the 63rd minute.

In the attack, the Hoos kept WVU keeper MacKenzie Smith busy for 90 minutes, with eight shots, but only two on target over the course of the game, as well as earning seven corners. By contrast, WVU’s attackers took 14 shots at Victoria Safradin and the Virginia defense. The match saw 10 fouls.

More UVA action coming up

Directly following that match, George Gelnovatch’s men’s soccer team takes the field against San Diego State at 8 p.m. Field Hockey goes to Norfolk to battle Old Dominion at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in an exhibition contest.
