CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The University of Virginia’s Memorial Gymnasium, built in 1924, has closed for extensive renovations estimated to be completed by fall 2026.

The project includes improvements to HVAC systems, fire suppression infrastructure, classroom spaces, and recreational areas. Accessibility updates, such as ADA-compliant restrooms, are also part of the renovations.

“These improvements are critical for safety, accessibility, and functionality,” said Erica Perkins, executive director of UVA Recreation.

During the closure, the UVA volleyball team will use North Grounds Recreation Center for practices and competitions. Other programs and activities typically held at Mem Gym are being relocated to alternate facilities across Grounds. To address the temporary reduction in indoor recreational space, Slaughter Recreation Center has extended its hours, and the Aquatic & Fitness Center will maintain its current schedule.

Outdoor facilities near Mem Gym, including basketball, tennis, and sand volleyball courts, remain open. Equipment can be borrowed from the Lady Astor Tennis Pavilion. “We appreciate the community’s understanding during this transition,” Perkins stated.
