PALYMYRA, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As dove hunting season approaches, Palmyra-based Firefly Fiber Broadband is launching a new campaign urging residents to “Be a Good Neighbor.” The initiative, launched by Central Virginia Electric Cooperative’s broadband company, aims to prevent accidental damage to fiber and utility lines — a problem that can knock out internet and phone service to entire neighborhoods and cost thousands to repair.

Firefly Communications Manager Melissa Gay says fiber lines don’t just carry internet — they carry our neighbors’ ability to work, learn, and stay connected.

She says even a single shot at a bird on a power line can sever critical connections, impacting homes, schools, and emergency services.

Firefly is using digital outreach and social media to spread awareness with three key messages:

  • Think Before You Aim: Shooting at power or fiber lines is dangerous and illegal.
  • Stay Connected: One damaged line can cut off an entire community’s internet and phone service, causing safety concerns for residents and public safety officials.
  • Be a Good Neighbor: Respect the connections that keep friends, families, and businesses online.
