CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Charlottesville Police Department has released its 2025 Snapshot, which shows gun-related incidents decreased by 51% from 2024 to 2025, marking one of the most substantial public safety improvements in recent years.

“Reducing gun violence remains one of our highest priorities,” Chief Kochis wrote in CPD’s release. “A 51% reduction in gun-related incidents represents real lives impacted and real harm prevented. This progress is the result of our dedicated staff, strong partnerships with our community and data-driven strategies that focus on both accountability and prevention.”

Overall crime declined by 10.9% when including larcenies and 17.8% when excluding larcenies, underscoring sustained reductions across multiple crime categories.

In 2025, CPD handled 48,959 calls for service, with less than 0.22% involving any use of force. Co-response data shows that more than half of co-response calls (52.7%) involved mental health-related incidents.

In addition, CPD continues to make progress in building a diverse and representative workforce. Currently 23% of CPD officers are female, 19% are Black and 7% are Hispanic, reflecting ongoing efforts to recruit and retain officers who reflect the community they serve.

“These statistics show that effective policing is about more than enforcement alone,” Chief Kochis added. “It’s about trust, professionalism, and meeting people where they are. We will continue to build on this momentum to keep our community safe and supported.”
