Charlottesville woman killed in drunk driving crash

FAUQUIER COUNTY, VA (CvilleRightNow) — A Charlottesville woman was killed in a Saturday, March 2, drunk driving accident in Fauquier County.

It happened at 10:26 p.m. on Route 637 (Shipps Tore Rd), approximately half a mile west of Route 17 (Marsh Rd).

A 2018 Ford Explorer traveling west on Route 637 failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway, and collided with a tree.

The driver of the Ford, Shannon P. Day, 37, of Sumerduck, VA, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Claire E. Caruso, 50, of Charlottesville, VA, who was also buckled up, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, Day was taken into custody and is facing charges including one count of driving under the influence: involuntary manslaughter, one count of driving under the influence, one count of reckless driving: failure to maintain proper control, and one count of open container. She has been transported to the Fauquier Adult Detention Center, where she is currently being held without bond.

The crash remains under investigation.
