Will Bennett’s Staff Remain Intact For 2015?

One of the keys to the recent success of the Virginia Basketball has been the continuity and consistency of the coaching staff.  Head Coach Tony Bennett has built a program in a short five years that has produced multiple NCAA births, 20 win seasons, and of course a remarkable 2014 run to the ACC regular season and tournament championships.  One of the bedrocks of that success plan has been Ritchie McKay, Virginia’s Associate Head Coach.  Back in 2009, one of the first orders of business for Tony Bennett was to recruit McKay, who was then the Head Coach of the Liberty Flames.  McKay agreed to help Bennett build, but it seemed as if it was only a matter of time before McKay would want to run his own program again.

Multiple media outlets, including the Daily Progress, the Daily Press, and ESPN have confirmed that McKay is a finalist for the College of Charleston’s head coaching position.  According to ESPN, the other five finalists are former Charleston player Anthony Johnson, NC State assistant Bobby Lutz, UConn assistant Karl Hobs, Clemson assistant Earl Grant, and Wofford head coach Mike Young.  McKay has previously been a head coach at Portland State, Colorado State, Oregon State, New Mexico, and Liberty.  McKay is one of the top assistants in the country, and if the Charleston job does not materialize, his name will definitely come up again when future coaching vacancies occur.
