Two City Teachers Get Outside Recognition

Two teachers in the city schools have won statewide and international awards. Michael Salvatierra, who teaches music at Venable Elementary School, was picked by the Virginia Lottery for its Super Teacher program. He gets $4,000 in prizes, including a check for $2000. Salvatierra (pictured right) got the check from Paula Otto (pictured left) of the Virginia Lottery. The photo was provided by the Virginia Lottery. Meanwhile, Matt Shields of Charlottesville High School has won an Inspirational Teacher award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A CHS grad who now attends MIT nominated Shields for the award. Many of Shields’ current students set off rockets on Memorial Day.
