The Albemarle Supervisors might add items dealing with taxation to their 2015 “wish list” for the General Assembly. County Attorney Larry Davis (pictured) says the Virginia Association of Counties wants to pursue equal taxing authority with cities. If state lawmakers let that happen, the county would have an easier time increasing items such as the transient occupancy tax. It gets paid by guests of motels and hotels. The General Assembly has traditionally resisted giving counties the level of taxing authority that cities enjoy. County leaders have wanted to explore alternatives to the real property tax. A majority of the supervisors voted last spring to raise the property tax rate to help out the county schools.
