A regional group has endorsed a new list of proposed remedies for the traffic congestion on 29 North. The Metropolitan Planning Organization gave its unanimous backing Wednesday to a more than $200 million package of potential improvements. Albemarle resident Elly Tucker told the group former VDOT Commissioner Philip Shucet’s solutions are the right stuff. Tucker hopes local business leaders will embrace the projects Shucet has recommended. Neil Williamson is the President of the pro-business Free Enterprise Forum, which opposes his proposal for a grade-separated interchange at 29 and Rio Road. He fears some businesses will fail if the interchange gets built. Albemarle Supervisor Ann Mallek (pictured left), VDOT’s John Lynch (pictured second from left), Julia Monteith of the University of Virginia (pictured second from right), and Albemarle Planning Commissioner Mac Lafferty (pictured right) were on hand for the vote supprting Shucet’s plan. The Commonwealth Transportation Board will consider his recommendations on June 18th.
