The statewide jobless rate is up again. The Virginia unemployment rate was 5.4% in July, up one-tenth-of-a-percent. It’s the third consecutive month where the figure has seen a slight increase. Researcher Ann Lang of the Virginia Employment Commission says the July rate is an improvement over last year. It was 5.7% at that time. The Virginia number is still well below the national average.
The award was announced on Wednesday and surprised no one.
