General Assembly Adjourns Without Adopting New Budget

General Assembly Adjourns Without Adopting New Budget

Members of the House of Delegates and State Senate left Richmond Saturday without adopting Virginia’s next two-year budget. House Speaker Bill Howell (pictured) and the rest of the General Assembly will come back in two weeks. The GOP-controlled House and the Democratically-controlled Senate will return on March 24th to resume their debate over a two-year spending plan. The major bone of contention is the expansion of Medicaid under the federal health-care law that many call Obamacare. General Assembly veterans hope the session won’t be a repeat of 2004, when a battle over taxes prevented the adoption of a new budget until mid-spring.
