Elizabeth Daly and ABC Board Settle Lawsuit

There’s a settlement in the legal action that Elizabeth Daly filed against representatives of the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Daly will get $212,500 and a letter from the ABC Board that explains the circumstances of her April 11th, 2013 arrest at the Barracks Road Shopping Center that she can show any future employers. Lawyers representing Daly had asked for $40 million. During her days as a University of Virginia undergraduate, Daly and two sorority sisters were horrified when a group of ABC agents swarmed around her SUV outside a grocery store. The agents were under the impression the 20 year old had purchased alcohol while she was underage. Daly’s purchases included LaCroix sparkling water. The settlement is not an admission of any wrongdoing by the plaintiff or the defendants. Attorney General Mark Herring announced the deal late Wednesday evening. Herring says ABC agents do important work enforcing our alcohol laws and combating underage drinking, and the new policies and procedures implemented after this incident will help ABC effectively fulfill its mission while ensuring the safety of officers and the public.
