The Albemarle Electoral Board is slapping a $100 fine against an anti-western bypass group that ran some ads before the November supervisors election. The board’s two Republican members, Clara Belle Wheeler and Alan Swinger, voted to fine the Charlottesville Bypass Truth Coalition. Wheeler and Swinger imposed the fine after Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford determined the new group should have filed a report that detailed what it spent during last fall’s election cycle. It spent several thousand dollars on ads urging voters to oust supervisors Duane Snow and Rodney Thomas. Those two Republicans lost to Democrats who opposed the bypass. The group that ran the ads was created by a much older organization known as the Charlottesville-Albemarle Transportation Coalition. CATCO President George Larie says his group did NOT take a stand on candidates.
