State Bar Plans Hearing Involving Gary Close

The Virginia State Bar plans to conduct a hearing on the actions of a former Culpeper County prosecutor. The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that lawyer David Baugh prodded the state bar to investigate Gary Close, who was the Culpeper Commonwealth’s Attorney for more than 20 years. Close resigned his post in 2012.

Baugh’s complaint involved Close’s actions against Michael Wayne Hash, whose family lives in the Crozet area. Hash was sent to prison after a jury convicted him of murdering 74-year-old Thelma Scroggins. Federal Judge James Turk overturned the conviction, and was highly critical of Close and law enforcement agencies in Culpeper County. Following his release from prison, Hash filed a federal lawsuit against Close, Culpeper Sheriff Scott Jenkins and others. That lawsuit was dismissed last year.
